In The Shadow of the Individual, I attempt to explore the paradox of contemporary life: the search for autonomy that, in its extreme, leads to isolation. The figure sitting beneath a closed window doesn't represent a particular person, but rather all of us, confronted by the silence left by disconnection. That dim light that barely touches her is, for me, a metaphor for what still unites us: fragile, yet persistent.
My interest is not to tell a story, but to reveal a state of mind that emerges in an era where independence is confused with self-sufficiency. I work with darkness, empty spaces, and immobility as a reflection of the tension between the desire for freedom and the need for others. I understand the frustration and depression that emerge in this context not as personal weaknesses, but as the echo of a social structure that pushes us to stand alone, even when the burden is too much.
This work is, in a way, a form of dialogue. In creating it, I question my own place in a world that rewards productivity but forgets presence. I wanted the viewer, upon observing it, to also feel that latent question: what remains of us when life becomes an exercise in individual resistance?
I don't seek to offer answers. I simply propose a space for pause, a respite where the gaze can linger and, perhaps, recognize oneself in the shadow of the other.
